The Wildlife Diversity Program, in the California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Wildlife Branch, is looking for an Environmental Services Intern to join our team of dedicated wildlife professionals as it strives to conserve and management California's gray wolf population. This a great opportunity to learn or improve an array of skills such as collecting field data with cameras, conducting track and scat surveys, processing samples, deploying deterrents to help mitigate wolf-livestock conflict, and communicating with livestock producers, other stakeholders, and the general public. Our team wants to maximize its effectiveness at monitoring and conserving California's wolves while mitigating wolf-livestock conflict and we are hoping to find a new team member who shares these goals!

Our intent is for this position to start on July 1 or soon thereafter.

This position offers the possibility of an office-centered telework agreement based on the Department's current Telework Policy.

The Environmental Services Intern classification is a non-testing classification.

The language below is required for these NT classifications.

Working Conditions

This position may require extensive time in the field driving on dirt roads, using 4WD drive vehicles and ATVs, and hiking in steep and rugged terrain under adverse weather. Position requires ability to lift 40 pounds, as well as physical strength and agility to hike with a backpack and/or other gear and to build and remove temporary fencing. The position may require irregular work hours including nights, weekends, and holidays. Overnight travel and camping may sometimes be required. This position regularly requires the use of a computer for several hours at a time in the office. Periods of sitting, standing, and walking in the office are required. A valid driver’s license is required to operate state vehicles. This position may be required to sometimes wear a uniform.

Special Requirements

Possession of valid California Driver License. Ability to drive for up to 8 hours. Ability to work outdoors in variable weather conditions, operate 4WD vehicles, wade in streams, and walk over uneven outdoor terrain carrying a 40-pound backpack for up to 6 hours. Camping and/or overnight travel may be required. Working at night may be required.

This position requires the possession of a valid Class C Driver's License. Must maintain a clean driving record. The selected candidate may be required to provide a photocopy (front and back) of the license: Name as stated on the license, issuing state, DL #, Class, expiration. 

The selected candidate may be required to provide a copy of their Degree/Official Transcripts.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

Skill to: Must possess strong written and verbal communication skills and be able to assess situations concerning resource issues and make independent decisions and take direction from others. Must possess strong organizational skills and the ability to track and meet multiple deadlines. Operate office equipment (computers, copies/scanners, telephones, etc.) and vehicles. Experience with telemetry and geographical information systems (GIS). Ability to operate camera traps, global positioning systems (GPS), and conduct standardized wildlife and vegetation surveys.

Special Personal Characteristics: A high degree of dependability, professionalism, and personal initiative will be expected. The incumbent is open to feedback on performance, can adapt to changing work environments and challenges, demonstrate empathy and understanding with members of the public, and have a positive attitude.

Interpersonal Skills: The incumbent must work well independently and in a team setting. Polite and tactful communication skills with both colleagues and members of the public will be expected. Strong verbal and listening skills are expected, with an emphasis on being proactive and positive.
