Job Description

Johnson College is currently seeking a part-time Fundamentals of Carpentry Instructor. This is a part-time position for the upcoming spring 2026 semester to include mornings and afternoon courses. The Fundamentals of Carpentry Instructor is responsible for teaching students the essential skills, knowledge, and safety practices required for entry-level work in the carpentry trade. Instructions include both online and hands-on lab components, preparing students for careers in residential and light commercial construction. The instructor will focus on developing students' abilities in carpentry tools, materials, and techniques while reinforcing safety, accuracy, and professionalism.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Teach courses covering basic carpentry skills, including measuring, layout, cutting, fastening, and assembly.
  • Provide instruction on the safe and proper use of hand tools, power tools, and woodworking machinery.
  • Deliver lessons on construction materials, fasteners, and building components used in residential framing and finishing.
  • Instruct students in blueprint reading, project planning, and shop math as related to carpentry.
  • Supervise hands-on projects such as floor and wall framing, installing doors/windows, drywall installation, and repair. Siding installation and repair.
  • Reinforce OSHA and construction site safety standards at all times.
  • Develop and update curriculum, lesson plans, and assessments aligned with industry standards.
  • Maintain accurate attendance, process, and grading records.
  • Participation in College activities and events. 

EDUCATION:

Associate Degree in the subject or a related subject taught

EXPERIENCE:

Technical - Minimum of 4 years experience in the area taught

SKILLS:

Individuals must have strong communication skills, the ability to teach, expertise in their program area, good managerial skills, knowledge of industry standards, assessment skills, organizational, and word-processing skills.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Enforce college policies and procedures with all students and within their course of study.

EQUIPMENT TO BE USED:

Equipment used in the program of study, computers and associated software.
