Resident Service Specialist (Unhoused Shelter)

Location: Alexandria, VA
Position Type: Contract
Pay: $16/hr
Residency Status: US Citizen


Position Description

The Resident Services Specialist provides direct support and guidance to individuals residing in the homeless shelter and hypothermia support locations, ensuring their well-being and progress toward self-sufficiency.

This role involves assisting residents with daily needs, addressing immediate concerns, monitoring compliance with shelter rules, supporting resource distribution, and de-escalating conflicts. The Specialist also connects residents with appropriate resources, facilitates access to services, and encourages participation in programs that promote stability and personal growth.

The Specialist is also responsible for completing necessary reports and documentation for each scheduled shift.

This position may require standing, walking, and occasionally lifting up to 20 pounds.

Skills Required

• Experience working with adults experiencing homelessness, diagnosed with behavioral health disorders, or who are substance dependent
• Counseling and crisis intervention skills
• Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
• Basic computer skills to maintain data in a Homeless Management Information System (HMIS)

Experience Required

• 2+  years related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience

Education Required

• High School Diploma

Education Preferred

• Bachelor’s degree in a human service field
