Position Summary

The Tutor / Mentor is a part-time, in-person role that supports the academic and personal growth of youth, primarily those enrolled in our Transitional-Aged Youth (TAY) and other youth-serving programs. This role includes homework assistance during the school year and the facilitation of engaging enrichment activities when school is not in session. Enrichment of content may include STEAM projects, financial literacy, and soft skills development such as public speaking, interpersonal communication, and emotional well-being. This position requires a balance of strong academic skills and a passion for mentoring youth in a supportive and empowering environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Academic Support : Provide one-on-one or small group tutoring across multiple subjects (especially math, science, and language arts) to help students succeed academically.

  • Enrichment Activities : Plan and facilitate enrichment sessions during school breaks or non-homework periods, focusing on hands-on learning and career-readiness skills.

  • Mentorship : Serve as a positive role model by promoting academic achievement, self-confidence, and personal development.

  • Data Tracking : Maintain accurate records of student attendance, participation, and progress. Submit timely reports to supervisors.

  • Communication : Maintain open lines of communication with students, caregivers (when applicable), and program staff to support student needs.

  • Collaboration : Partner with OSS team members to align tutoring and mentorship activities with broader program goals.

Qualifications

  • Education : Associate’s degree required; coursework in education, psychology, social work, or a related field is preferred.

  • Experience : Previous experience tutoring or working with youth in an educational or mentorship capacity is strongly preferred.

  • Academic Strengths : Strong knowledge of core academic subjects and the ability to adapt explanations to various learning styles.

  • Facilitation Skills : Ability to design and lead engaging enrichment activities that encourage critical thinking and creativity.

  • Interpersonal Skills : Patient, approachable, and committed to building trusting relationships with youth.

  • Communication : Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Technology : Comfortable with basic computer applications, including Microsoft Office or Google Workspace tools, for documentation and communication.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is passionate about education and youth development, thrives in a collaborative environment, and brings both academic and emotional support to their work. This role is perfect for someone who is organized, dependable, and enjoys empowering students through tutoring and mentorship.
