Overview (Scope of Role)

The Technical Service and Development (TS&D) Specialist, Paper & Board role will be based in Midland, MI. The TS&D Specialist provides support and expertise for the paper and board market in North America to strategic customer partners. The role will be focused on solution development in the area of sustainable packaging with paper and board materials as a growing application and market segment. The specialist will manage the relationship with new and existing customers serving as the technical focal point for the organization as well as assist on special projects internally. Support of heritage business in the area of graphical and specialty papers is also in scope. This is an onsite role based in Midland, MI that would require at 20-40% travel domestically with a small portion of international travel to internal sites in Europe to be expected.

Responsibilities

As the technical interface with customers, the role has a strong application and product development focus, with additional responsibilities for ensuring product quality meets customer needs. Key responsibilities include:
    Leading innovation projects in the area of sustainable packaging solutions in alignment with Global TS&D structure
    • Project management - opportunity to lead project team
    • Designs and initiates technical programs and experiments
    • Builds required ecosystem to deliver innovation targets successfully
    • Accountable to deliver key project milestones on time
    • Demonstrates sound business acumen to ensure resources are invested in highest value projects and activities
  • Technical service to strategic customers
    • Is a go-to expert for technical questions in the area of Paper and Board (application needs and properties, formulation, rheology, coating, drying, and converting processes).
    • Designs and initiates application lab and pilot programs to support commercialization of existing and new products
    • Support and align with account managers for strategic customers
  • Follows the innovation stage gate process demonstrating required documentation, project management discipline, and timely communication to teams and stakeholders
  • Technical lead focal point for marketing products and collaborating with other functions for initiatives in the area of paper and board packaging in North America.
  • Identifies and leads programs with 3rd parties (institutes, consortiums, co-suppliers, technology partners, etc.)
  • Actively participate in our global TS&D and R&D community to share best practices and knowledge
Qualifications
  • 10+ years of technical service or related technical experience within coating, packaging, and/or converting industries
  • MS Degree in chemical science (chemical engineering, polymer science, coating technology, or equivalent) preferred
  • Strong base of knowledge in coatings, rheology, and process science related to paper, board and converting markets.
  • Strong business acumen and customer centric experience welcomed
