Job Description / Essential Elements: SPEECH/LANGUAGE TEACHER
Responsibility:
Under the direction of the Special Education Coordinator and/or Assistant Superintendent, conducts speech and language program as a result of screening and referrals conducted within the regular school program.
Essential Functions:
1. Conducts Individual Educational Plan (IEP) meetings for each child referred, dismissed, or transferred to the school site.
2. Responsible for establishing a therapy program and completing a therapy plan for each individual enrolled at the IEP meeting.
3. Complies with all applicable legal requirements including participation in the IEP process.
4. Schedules and maintains individual or group therapy according to the needs of the individual child as documented in the IEP.
5. Prepares individual evaluation reports and programs and submits to the school for filing in students' cumulative file.
6. Prepares other reports as uniformly required by the state, county, and district.
7. Informs parents of enrolled children about therapy program and encourages their participation in therapy at home and at IEP meetings.
8. Participates in all state/federal review processes as requested.
9. Possesses ability to read, understand, and carry out oral and written directions.
Duties/Responsibilities:
1. Participates in professional growth activities such as classes, conferences, staff meetings, visitations, evaluation of new materials, etc.
2. Refers children to other services when requested or needed.
3. Requests anticipated needed materials and supplies for upcoming school year.
4. Prepares schedule for principals and begins therapy by the 11th day of school and continues sessions through the week prior to school ending.
5. Implements all duties in compliance with state and federal special education laws and mandates.
6. Performs other duties similar to the above in scope and function as required.
Qualifications:
1. Skills to motivate students and to communicate with individuals from varied backgrounds.
2. Knowledge of California State Standards, curriculum, education code, and Special Education law.
3. Ability to maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with students, parents, and school personnel.
4. Ability to perform a variety of specialized and responsible tasks, maintain records, and meet schedule deadlines.
5. Ability to provide own transportation between school sites.
Education and Experience:
1. Bachelor's Degree with valid California Clinical or Rehabilitative Service Credential authorizing service in language, speech, and hearing.
2. Teaching experience at various grade levels; knowledge of subject area and instructional methodologies and techniques.
3. Master's Degree or post-graduate course work.
Physical Requirements:
1. Position requires normal physical strength and endurance for standing, sitting, bending, or walking.
2. Work assignments are normally located in a work environment with light physical work and require light physical effort.
3. Lifting 25 lbs. maximum or carrying any object weighing over 15 lbs.
