The New York Times Opinion department is seeking an editorial assistant whose responsibilities will include fact-checking, research and administrative tasks. The job is for someone who is organized, digitally knowledgeable and has broad-ranging news interests. Responsibilities will shift depending on the daily needs of the department, so flexibility is important.

The editorial assistant must possess a keen eye for detail, a strong grasp of compelling arguments and quality writing, and exceptional research skills. A commitment to accuracy, precision, and thorough verification is essential, along with the ability to quickly absorb and analyze unfamiliar material under tight deadlines. Discretion in handling sensitive editorial content, familiarity with various social media platforms, and a deep interest in opinion journalism are also crucial. Additionally, collegiality and diplomacy are vital for success in this role.

This is a hybrid position based in New York City and includes regular attendance in the office each week per your departmental guidance.

Responsibilities:
  • Verify and/or correct the accuracy of information contained in opinion work
  • Assist with editing and digital production of pieces
  • Post on various social media platforms and collaborate with Opinion audience team on deepening relationships with readers
  • See essays through all stages of the publishing process
  • Keep abreast of news
  • Clerical and administrative duties
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.
  • You will report to the Assistant Editor, Opinion
Basic Qualifications:
  • Experience in journalism (professional or internship) conducting research and fact-checking and/or text editing for published media strongly preferred
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Ability to multitask and manage several deadlines simultaneously
  • Excellent organizational skills with a sharp eye for detail
  • Strong writing and editing skills
  • Familiarity with Times Style and the newspaper's standards and ethics guidelines

The annual base pay range for this role is between:

$80,952.15-$81,000 USD
