WAYNE COUNTY SCHOOLS CAREER CENTER 
JOB DESCRIPTION 
TITLE: Custodian 

JOB SUMMARY: The Custodian will provide students and staff with a safe, attractive, comfortable, orderly, and clean educational environment. The Custodian reports to the Maintenance Manager and/or Director of Operations. 

QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum of a high school diploma, GED or proof of graduation. Knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment used in commercial custodial work. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and 15-30 pounds regularly and push/pull at least 75 pounds. Ability to stand and walk, bend at the waist, twist and turn for extended periods. Must be able to set up and work safely on a lightweight 10 foot ladder. Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions. Ability to interact effectively with students, staff and the public. Proficient in use of technology applicable to job function (i.e. email, Internet access). 

REQUIREMENTS:


  1. BCI and FBI criminal records results less than one-year old must be submitted prior to initial employment and as required thereafter.

  2. A negative result on a TB test completed within 90 days of employment may be required.

  3. Ohio Department of Public Safety, Division of Homeland Security, Public Employee Form completed and signed prior to initial employment.

PERFORMANCE CHARACTERISTICS: 
Work independently with minimal direction. 
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers. 
Maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality when dealing with student and staff information. 
Act as an ambassador for the Wayne County Joint Vocational School District. 
Promote public relations and deal tactfully and diplomatically with people. 

GENERAL DUTIES: 


  1. Understand and follow all local, state, and federal safety regulations and procedures.

  2. Read, understand and follow SDS regulations.

  3. Work with a wide variety of commercial chemicals using personal protective equipment as deemed necessary by the product manufacturers. 

  4. Properly use and care for all tools, equipment and supplies.

  5. Assemble, set up, move and adjust office and classroom furniture and equipment. 

  6. Respond to emergencies and perform clean-up, repair, and/or turn off main water, power, gas lines as needed. 

  7. Provide a written report of all tools, equipment, and facilities needing repair or any unsafe conditions to the Maintenance Manager. Immediately resolve if possible and if not secure area or equipment. 

  8. Monitor mechanical systems as needed and report any problems that cannot be resolved. 

  9. Willingness to monitor student workers as requested. 

  10. Assist with snow removal. 

  11. Assure security of building. 

  12. Close and lock doors/gates of rooms/areas when not in use. 

  13. Turn out all lights when not in use, 

  14. Assist with updating Maintenance Procedure Manual. 

  15. Meet established schedule and timelines.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES: 


  1. Clean, vacuum, scotch guard, sweep, dust, mop, scrub, polish, strip, steam clean, and wax floor coverings. 

  2. Dust and clean offices, classrooms, and furniture. 

  3. Clean chalkboards/whiteboards and erasers and empty pencil sharpeners at least weekly. 

  4. Empty and maintain trash receptacles and replace liners as necessary. 

  5. Clean glass and windows. 

  6. Clean drinking fountains. 

  7. Clean walls and lockers. 

  8. Clean exhaust vents. 

  9. Maintain all floors in good condition and appearance. 

  10. Clean and stock restrooms. 

  11. Maintain building sanitation. 

  12. Perform minor repairs and submit work orders as necessary.

OTHER:


  1. Perform other duties as requested by the Maintenance Manager and/or Director of Operations. 

  2. Cover for and assist other maintenance, maintenance custodial, and custodial staff as assigned by the Maintenance Manager and/or Director of Operations, therefore cross-training and ongoing professional development will be important. 

  3. Support and implement Board adopted policies, administrative rules and regulations, safety policies, procedures and programs. 

  4. The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or nonprescribed controlled substance in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the District. 

  5. In the implementation of these duties, the Custodian may be at risk for exposure to bloodborne pathogens and is subject to the District Bloodborne Pathogen Control Plan.
