Job Description

IMPORTANT - This is a grant-funded position, not to exceed 2.5 years of support for the selected candidates. 


We are seeking two (2)  Congressional Papers Processing Archivists  who will complete the processing of one of the following congressional papers collections: the archives of former Maryland Senator Paul Sarbanes or recently retired Maryland Senator Ben Cardin. The Congressional Papers Processing Archivists will serve as a member of the Archives team, situated within the Special Collections department of the Sheridan Libraries.


Paul Sarbanes served as a member of the US House of Representatives 1971-1977 and as US Senator from Maryland, 1977-2007. Sarbanes? papers include correspondence, memos, press releases, speeches, voting records, materials related to developing legislation, and more. It also includes some material documenting his pre-Senate life and career.


Ben Cardin served as a member of the US House of Representatives 1987-2007 and as US Senator from Maryland, 2007-2025. Cardin?s papers include approximately 320 cubic feet of paper records and 2.5 TB of digital records that document his legislative work, press and communications, casework for constituents, appropriations, field work, and committee briefing materials.


Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Arrange and describe approximately 1200 cubic feet of records documenting the career of former Maryland Senator Sarbanes.
  • Arrange and describe approximately 320 cubic feet of records and 2.5TB of born-digital records documenting the career of former Maryland Senator Ben Cardin.
  • Arrangement and description includes full intellectual control of collection materials as well as a complete online finding aid.
  • Identify conservation issues in collection and collaborate with Conservation department to address these concerns as appropriate.
  • Keep a detailed record of activities and produce quarterly reports on processing progress.
  • Participate in the development, documentation, and implementation of processing standards in the Archives unit.
  • Participate in the department?s reparative description project by assisting in the review of the repository?s extant congressional papers.


Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrated experience in the principles of archival appraisal, processing, description, and reference; specifically applying archival metadata standards, including DACS, EAD, and EAC-CPF.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills.
  • Commitment to advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion through archival practice, mentorship, and research methodology.

Additional Information

  • Primary workspace will be at the Library Service Center in Laurel, MD.
  • Some travel to the Homewood campus may be required.




Minimum Qualifications

  • Master?s Degree in Library Science, Archival Studies, or related field required.
  • Two years professional experience in an archives or library, or professional experience in public history or community outreach.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.




Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience processing collections of congressional papers.
  • Experience processing born-digital records.
  • Educational background in public policy, political science, or a related field.
  • Experience working with an archival content management system such as Archivist?s Toolkit or Archives Space.
