The chaplain provides or makes available spiritual, religious, and emotional resources for patients and their families during the patient's hospitalization. Provides spiritual and emotional support for the hospital staff. Serves as an educational resource for staff. Serves on hospital committees as assigned by the Director. Participates on projects as may pertain to the clinically assigned area. Provides on‑call coverage as assigned. Additional Job Description Minimum Qualifications Education, Certification, and/or Licensure Ordination and/or endorsement with a faith community, and in good standing. A Master’s of Divinity or Master’s of Religious Studies from a seminary accredited by the Association of Theological Schools OR an equivalent graduate‑level degree that may be counted towards board certification. Board Certified chaplain with the Association of Professional Chaplains or the National Association of Catholic Chaplains or obtained within three years of hire. Four units of Clinical Pastoral Education. Preferred Qualifications Experience Two years of healthcare chaplaincy experience preferred. Core Duties and Responsibilities Makes spiritual care visits to patients, their families, and hospital staff on a regular and consistent basis to enable them to utilize, discover, or develop their spiritual resources in times of crises. Interacts consistently in a warm manner that effectively invites others into pastoral relationships. Functions as an integral member of the multidisciplinary teams of one's assigned areas. Provides effective, competent, informed spiritual support for organ donation, ethical dilemmas, discontinuation of life support and palliative care, as well as trauma and medical/surgical patients. Serves as an educational resource in the area of spirituality, grief, compassion fatigue and resilience, and ethical decision making for hospital staff and community. Provides spiritual resources that are appropriate in light of the other's tradition, including reading material, provision for ceremonies and rituals, and arranging of visits by faith representatives from the community when specifically requested. Documents in the patient record and in departmental records. Communicates relevant patient information with the Spiritual Care team and interdisciplinary team members. Maintains a consistent accountability for spiritual care activities with Spiritual Care team members and Department Director. Participates as a Spiritual Care team member in the on‑call pager rotation that provides 24‑hour availability of spiritual care. Participates in the Administrative Chaplain On‑Call rotation on a regular basis. Completes administrative duties as assigned by the Department Director. Serves on hospital committees as assigned by the Department Director. Serves as a clinical mentor for students and as an educational resource for ACPE programs. Develops wellness initiatives and opportunities for hospital staff. Initiates personal and professional development related to spiritual care functions and responsibilities. Adheres to the Common Code of Ethics for Chaplains, Pastoral Counselors, Pastoral Educators, and Students. Maintains credentials in one's ecclesiastical endorsement agency and professional organization. Physical Requirements Is in good physical condition to withstand the frequent requests for crisis intervention from patients and staff. Has healthy coping skills to deal with the constant stress of the position. Skills and Abilities Ability to use office technology systems. Positive communication and customer satisfaction skills.
