Purpose:
The Finance Department is seeking an Accountant that will have direct responsibility for ensuring the accuracy and compliance of all accounting transactions. They will contribute to many of the various aspects and levels of accounting support services including: general ledger, accounts receivable, accounts payable, billing, collections, cash receipts, payroll, maintaining support documentation,employee expense reimbursements, produce and review various accounting and financial reports. They will be required to be in the Oakland office. This position is in the staff union and reports to the Controller.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Responsible for supporting all accounting functions
• Assist in month end closing, day to day accounting operations, account reconciliations for general ledger accounts, reconcile accounts, and analyses
• Accurately prepare journal entries
• Assist in the preparation of financial statements including consolidations and financial reporting
• Updates, posts and/or reconciles prepaid schedules.
• Review and pay accounts payable and expense reports/reconcile expenses
• Assist with completing a timely and accurate month end close.
• Works on a variety of financial projects as assigned.
• Assist with year-end closings and preparation of the audit process.
• Assist with the budget process
• Prepare and process payroll
• Process and pay all Union Leave expenses
• Perform other tasks as requested by the Finance Manager and Controller
• Comply with AFSCME Local 3299 Policies and Procedures passed by the Executive Board and/or other AFSCME 3299 leadership

Education and Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting/Finance preferred
• Minimum 1 year of relevant accounting experience required
• Experience with Concur, ADP payroll system a plus. QuickBooks experience required.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office including an excellent working knowledge of Excel.
• Ability to prioritize and multitask in a fast paced environment.
• Ability to handle confidential information in a discreet, professional manner.
• Demonstrated ability to be proactive, diligent and reliable to meet deadlines.
• Highly responsible and reliable with exceptional attention to detail.
• Ability to work independently, but also as part of a team when needed.

Additional Requirements:

• Extended day and occasional overnight travel.
• Willingness to work long and irregular hours, including nights and weekends.
• Must possess a valid California driver’s license, auto insurance with business coverage, and an automobile for business use.

Physical Requirements (as required by ADA)
Work is performed in a variety of employment settings. Driving, travel, temporary assignments, irregular and extended work hours are required.
